4 Common Reasons Pools Fail Safety Inspections

When it comes to pool and spa safety inspections, most pool safety inspection failures are caused by a handful of simple issues that homeowners often overlook. Understanding why pools fail safety inspections is the first step toward securing your certification. The good news is that many of these problems can usually be fixed in less than 20 minutes before your inspection takes place.
As a qualified pool safety inspector servicing Melbourne’s South East and the Mornington Peninsula, Rules for Pools and Barriers in Frankston regularly sees the same compliance issues appear.

1. Pool Gates That Don’t Self-Close Properly

A pool gate must automatically close and latch securely from any open position, including resting on the latch. If the gate sticks, swings slowly or fails to latch completely, the barrier will not pass inspection.

Over time, hinges can wear out, gates can drop slightly or debris can interfere with the closing mechanism. In many cases, a simple hinge adjustment or latch replacement is all that is needed.

Quick Tip

Open the gate just a few centimetres and let it go. If it does not fully close and latch by itself every time, it likely needs attention before inspection day.

2. Excessive Gaps Under the Fence

The gap beneath a pool fence or barrier must not exceed 100mm. Soil movement, erosion, loose pavers or landscaping changes can gradually create larger openings underneath the fence. Even if the fence originally complied, natural ground movement can create a non-compliant gap over time.

Quick Tip

Walk around the entire perimeter of your fence and check for uneven ground levels or sunken areas beneath the barrier. Often, topping up soil or resetting a loose paver can quickly solve the issue.

3. Climbable Objects Too Close to the Fence

One of the most common reasons for failed inspections is climbable objects positioned too close to the outside of the pool fence.

Items such as pot plants, outdoor furniture, BBQs, storage boxes, toys and even trees can provide children with a foothold to climb over the barrier. In most cases, climbable objects must be at least 900mm away from the outside of the fence. The measurement is taken from the top of the fence going out in an arc, so certain small pots can be closer than 900mm. For many pools built before May 2010, the non-climbable zone extends to 1200mm.

Plants and shrubs can also become non-compliant if they develop horizontal branches or dense growth near the fence.

Quick Tip

Stand outside your pool fence and look at the area from a child’s perspective. If something could be used as a step or handhold, move it away from the barrier.

4. Fence Gaps and Warped Sections

Pool fencing can shift, bend or warp over time due to weather exposure, movement or general wear and tear. Gaps between vertical bars, fence panels or joins must remain less than 100mm wide. Larger openings are among the most common pool barrier defects, as they reduce the effectiveness of the barrier and create a serious safety risk.

Quick Tip

Pay close attention to corners, joins and older fence sections where movement is most likely to occur. Minor repairs or adjustments are often enough to restore compliance.

Most Pool Barrier Issues Are Easy to Fix

Many homeowners assume a failed pool inspection will involve expensive repairs, but that is rarely the case. Most non-compliance issues are straightforward and can often be rectified quickly with a few simple adjustments.

Checking your gate, clearances, fence spacing and surrounding objects before your inspection can save time, stress, and the cost of a return visit.

If you need a qualified inspector for your pool or spa barrier inspection in Melbourne’s South East or the Mornington Peninsula, Rules for Pools and Barriers in Frankston can help ensure your barrier meets Victorian safety standards and provide the required compliance certification for council submission.
